Michigan Gators 01 Orange start 2011 in a great way!!!
Coach Teri Steinwascher's U10 girls won their third National Indoor Championship in a row in February when they traveled to Cleveland OH and defeated some good competition. The girls defeated two Ohio teams and the North Carolina NLA Black to move onto the final game against the Vardar 01 Blasco team. The final was 7-3 and the girls completed the three-peat! Our new full-time goalkeeper Maddi Vick made some unbelievable stops in leading the team to the championship.
The team co-hosted the MI Hawk-MI Gator Friendlies on several dates at Ultimate and Total Wixom where they played 8 games against various teams such as the Hawks, Cleveland FC, Grand Rapids Crew, etc... The team played well going 6-0-2 and plans are in the works for expanding the event for next year to the Midwest Winter Friendlies with play in Michigan and Ohio.
In April, the team marched into Cincinnati OH to compete in the highly ranked Cincinnati Elite Invitational where they combined great goalkeeping, defense, and offense to take first place. In defeating the CUSA and Hammer FC teams, the team matched up against the host Cincy United Lakota team in the finals. The game was tied at the end of regulation at 1-1 and the girls pulled out the championship prevailing in PK's, 3-2.
The girls were ball-girls for coach Teri's Henry Ford varsity team on May 4th when they took on Utica Eisenhower. The girls enjoyed watching all 20 of the Michigan Gator players who play on both of those great teams!!!
The girls are currently competing in MYSL's U11 Premier division where they're off to a 4-0-1 start and are working hard toward their season ending trip to Dayton over Memorial Day weekend where they'll be looking to defend last year's championship. AS THE SAYING GOES.....NOTHING GREATER THAN BEING A GATOR!!!!
Another banner year for our 2011 Gator scholarship athletes!
We have been blessed to have such great athletes grace our fields. This is our list of graduating players who will continue their soccer careers at leading academic institutions. We couldn't be more proud!

Erin Beckwell To Join Women's Soccer
The Siena Heights University Women’s Soccer team is proud to announce the signing of Erin Beckwell. Beckwell is from Shelby Township, Michigan where she will graduate from Henry Ford II High School. At Ford she started on the varsity team as a freshman, and has started every year since. In 2009 she earned the Hardest Working Player Award.
Outside of high school, Beckwell has play with the Michigan Gators Soccer Club. In 2011 her team was a State Cup Semi-Finalist and a Finalist in 2010. In ‘09 they won the State Cup U-16 age group.
Academically, Beckwell has received four Scholastic certificates of Merit in digital photography and visual arts. She will look to Art while attending Siena Heights University.
When asked about selecting Siena Heights Beckwell commented, “What I like most about the school are the soccer and art programs.” Siena Heights Head Coach Scott Oliver commented, “What initially excited me about Erin was her hard work and determination. As a defender she is never afraid to be in the tough spot to make the play. Now that I know her a little more, I am excited about her ability in the classroom and her overall light hearted attitude. She is a real competitor on the field and off the field she is outgoing and personable. I think she is a great addition to our team and I am expecting big contributions from her on our back line.”
Bulldogs Add Jenna Ruimveld and Fendi Foster To 2011 Women's Soccer Class
Ferris State University women's soccer head coach Matt Kellogg hopes two more pieces to capturing a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship title and earning a berth into the NCAA Division II Tournament in the near future have been discovered with the additions of Jenna Ruimveld (Vicksburg) and Fendi Foster (Sterling Heights/Stevenson).
Both have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Ferris State and play for the Bulldogs, starting with this 2011 fall season.
"These student-athletes are another two pieces of this great (recruiting) class and will represent our soccer program well on and off the field," said Kellogg, who starts his second season at Ferris State this fall. "They both compliment our other incoming freshmen and the returning players quite well."
Ruimveld, a forward, has attained All-Wolverine Conference recognition the last two seasons (2009 and 2010) at Vicksburg (Mich.) High School. Ruimveld served as a captain for head coach Tim Hale's team as a junior in 2010 and recorded 23 points with eight goals and seven assists to claim first-team all-district recognition. The 2011 team captain garnered Most Valuable Player Award honors in her 2009 sophomore season after achieving all-conference honorable mention laurels as freshman in 2008. Ruimveld will earn her fourth varsity letter in soccer this spring and is a three-year (2007-09) cross country letterwinner.
A National Honor Society member, Ruimveld also holds membership in the National Art Honors Society and is active in the student senate. The 5-7 Ruimveld has played club soccer the last six years for TKO Premier.
The daughter of David and Ginny Ruimveld of Vicksburg, Mich., Jenna will graduate this spring and plans to pursue study nursing at Ferris State. Jenna will be reunited with her older sister, Kasey, who will be a junior on the 2011 FSU women's soccer team member.
"Jenna will be another player who adds speed to our lineup," said Kellogg, , who guided Ferris State to a 7-9-3 overall record and a fourth-place 7-6-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) North Division. "She has a proven ability to not only assist with goals, but score them as well. I believe Jenna will be productive in games when she uses her athleticism and is able to get in behind defenses and help us create scoring chances. Jenna is the type of player who makes coaching enjoyable."
Foster is a three-time (2008-10) team Most Valuable Offensive Player Award selection at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Sterling Heights, Mich. The 5-7 defender-forward received conference all-academic honors the last two seasons and has served as varsity team captain under head coach Bob Mondoux. A three-year (2008-10) varsity letterwinner in soccer, Foster helped the Titans to both a Macomb Area Conference (MAC) and district tournament title as a freshman in 2008. She played junior varsity basketball from 2007-08.
Academically, Foster is the vice president of her school's student council and has been a student council member since 2007. The National Honor Society member was involved in the school's environmental club and captained the powerpuff football team.
The daughter of Anton and Nicole Foster of Sterling Heights, Mich., Fendi will graduate this spring 2011 and is presently undecided about her academic major at FSU.
"I'm not sure where we're going to play Fendi at this time," said Kellogg. "She has the ability to be a threat in the attack, but I also know that she can help shore up the back line. With the graduation of Kristen March in the back line, our defense will take on a new identity and Fendi could be a key part of that new look. She's a great person and also a fierce competitor that you always want to have on your team."
Ferris State Women's Soccer Lands Sara Sikorski and Stephanie Garland
The Ferris State University women's soccer program hopes to bolster its offensive production for the upcoming 2011 season and the signing of two talented prep student-athletes in Sara Sikorski (Rochester Hills/Rochester) and Stephanie Garland (Macomb/L'Anse Creuse North) should help in the scoring department according to FSU women' soccer head coach Matt Kellogg.
"I'm excited about these two players who can step in right away and help add depth to our attack," said Kellogg, who begins his second season at Ferris State this fall after directing the Bulldogs to a 7-9-3 overall record and a 7-6-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) North Division. "Our conference is a very tough defensive league, but I'm confident both Sara and Stephanie will be up to the challenge."
Sikorski enters her senior year this spring at Rochester High School in Rochester Hills, Mich., and will serve as the Falcons' team captain for the 2011 season. As a junior in 2010, the 5-6 forward recorded 11 points on two goals with seven assists for head coach Todd Heugh's squad and was a teammate of current FSU women's soccer student-athlete Hillary Braun. Sikorski accumulated 11 points with three goals and five assists as a sophomore in 2009 while helping the Falcons post a 10-6-4 overall record.
A two-year varsity letterwinner in soccer, Sikorski has also earned three (2008-10) varsity letters in volleyball while being a member of the junior varsity teams in soccer (2008) and volleyball (2007). In volleyball, Sikorski served as varsity team captain for the 2010 campaign while garnering all-county and all-region accolades. She also achieved All-Oakland Activities Association (OAA) recognition for the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Sikorski, who has attained OAA Scholar-Athlete laurels all four years (2008-11), is active in the school's freshman mentor program from 2009-11.
In club soccer, Sikorski has competed for the Rochester (Mich.) Soccer Club from 2003-11.
The daughter of Gary and Julie Sikorski of Rochester Hills, Mich., Sara is slated to graduate this spring and will major in pre-pharmacy at Ferris State.
"Sara is a strong forward with pace to get in behind the opponent's defenses," said Kellogg. "This is one of the areas we lacked last season which will help give us another way to score goals. Opponents will now have to respect our ability to possess and our ability to play direct.
Sara also excels in the classroom and really is the type of person that embodies the student-athlete image," added Kellogg.
Garland, a midfielder-forward, claimed All-Macomb Area Conference (MAC) honors as a junior last season at L'Anse Creuse North High School in Macomb, Mich. She netted 15 goals and had eight assists for 38 points while achieving D1 all-district and all-county second-team plaudits as head coach Scott Boice's team went 10-5-2 overall for the second consecutive campaign. In her 2009 sophomore season, Garland accumulated 38 points on 13 goals and 12 assists en route to claiming first-team MAC White Division accolades. She also was named to the D1 all-district and second-team All-Macomb County squads in helping the Crusaders capture the 2009 MAC White Division Championship crown.
The 5-6 Garland totaled 37 points by scoring 14 goals with nine assists as a freshman in the 2008 season as L'Anse Creuse North earned a district championship title and finished the campaign at 14-7-1 overall. For her efforts, Garland was selected to the All-MAC White Division First Team along with being recognized as a D1 all-district and All-Macomb County Third-Team pick.
Garland has lettered in varsity soccer since her freshman year (2008) and is a three-year (2009-11) varsity basketball letterwinner. Academically, Garland has held membership in the National Honor Society (11th and 12th grades) along with being active in the school's leadership council and link crew programs. She has played club soccer for the Michigan Gators since the summer of 2008.
Stephanie, the daughter of Russel and Tina Garland of Macomb, Mich., will graduate this spring and plans to study psychology at FSU.
"Stephanie a highly-skilled player," Kellogg said. "She's technical on the ball and reads the game well whether she is in the midfield or up front. She has the ability to find the back of the net which we certainly will welcome this fall.
"Stephanie is the type of player who will find a way to make an impact on the game and I look for her to be a contributor in her first collegiate season as a result of playing at a highly-competitive level for a number of years," Kellogg added.
Ferris State Women's Soccer Inks Class of 2011
Several new faces will be joining the Ferris State University women's soccer program this fall as eight student-athletes have of Intent to don the Crimson and Gold as announced by FSU women' soccer head coach Matt Kellogg.
The eight-member class consists of three forwards, three midfielders, one defender, and one goalkeeper.
"This recruiting class is a great group of players on and off the field," said Kellogg, who will begin his second year directing the Bulldogs this fall. "I have had an opportunity to know these eight student-athletes well through the recruiting process and know they're not only great players, but great people as well.
"This class will definitely help us to build on the successes the program had this past fall and keep us moving forward. I expect a lot out of this group right from the start and to help push our veterans to a new levels of play," added Kellogg.
Comprising the group are forward Jenna Ruimveld (Vicksburg), defender-forward Fendi Foster (Sterling Heights/Stevenson), midfielder Taylor Dicicco (Washington Township/Eisenhower), forward-midfielder Samantha Kay (Portage/Northern), goalkeeper Jessica Wineke (Rochester Hills/Adams), forward Sara Sikorski (Rochester Hills/Rochester), midfielder-forward Stephanie Garland (Macomb/L'Anse Creuse North), and midfielder Leanne Boehm (Macomb/Henry Ford II).
Kellogg believes this group not only fills the team's major needs, but also adds versatility and depth.
"At the end of last season, we had quite a few injuries and just didn't seem to have the depth to finish strong," said Kellogg. "This class certainly addresses the need for more depth. With five of the seven players we lost from last year's squad being attacking players, this class is loaded with attackers that can play a variety of roles for us in the attack."
An in-depth release highlighting these eight Bulldog signees will be forthcoming in the near future.
Ferris State registered a 7-9-3 overall record for the 2010 season, which included a fourth-place 7-6-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) North Division.

Gator Nation !!
.
Coach Renee took a mixed team of U-10 01’ Blue and U-9 02’ Blue Michigan Gators to the Lansing Capital Area Classic this past weekend to experience their first ever 8-v-8 competition. They successfully CHOMPED away the rival teams with crisp passing and laser like goal strikes. The team allowed 0 goals against and peppered other teams with 24 goals on their way to an all Gator final.
Coach Renee’s Gator team fought hard through a 0-0 regulation and double overtime shoot-out, to claim tournament victory over our friend coach Gary’s U-11 Blue team. It was a spectacular game and successfully showcased the skills and training of Gator Nation!!
Jonah Chrisman.... Best teammate ever!

The last time I spoke to Jonah, he was sitting in the bleachers at Stevenson High School waiting for the girls varsity game to begin. He was sitting with Keaton and Spencer and, as I approached them, the three of them, as many of my ex-players often do, seemed to be giddy and anxious to start some trouble with me. As soon as I got near them, the relentless teasing started.
“Hey old man,” Keaton blurted out, placing his hands around his mouth in order to throw his voice. He didn't need to. I was only two rows away. Spencer and Jonah were smiling like a couple of pranksters as they leaned into Keaton, knowing they were going to be witnesses to a possible classic cut down session.
“You still think you can run old man?” Keaton continued. I stopped in my tracks.
“What? You think you can beat me?”
“I'll give you a twenty yard lead in a fifty yard dash and beat you running backwards,” he quipped back. Spencer and Jonah threw their heads back in laughter.
“You said that a few years back and I whipped you easily.” I responded. “Do you want an old man to embarrass you again?”
“That was five years ago,” Keaton quickly shot back. “I was eleven at the time.”
As I pointed toward the field, I said, “I'll go down on that field right now if you want and whip you in front of this capacity crowd.”
“The only way you could beat me if they put a cheeseburger at the finish line.”
Spencer and Jonah laughed heartily as they reached toward Keaton to give him a high five.
“Oh you think that's funny?” I said to the two of them. “He steals my joke and uses it against me and you two clowns laugh.” They all shook their headsin solidarity. Then, I quickly stepped toward them like I was going to get them. Then I stopped. “Don't let me come up there,” I warned. Jonah grabbed his crutch.
“This will protect us,” he said.
“Yeah right,” I answered back. “If I get a hold of that, you know where it's going to end up.”
“Ooooh,” they responded in unison. Then Keaton shot back, “What are you going to do, throw your hat at us?”
It was then that I knew I couldn't win any battle of wits. They had a support system and I had only me. When men razz each other they need friends loyal to their cause to laugh at their jokes. In the case I'm describing, I was certainly out numbered.
Smiling, I watched the three of them taunt me to try and come up and get them. Trying to savor the moment, I looked beyond them and tried consciously to become more aware of that which surrounded us.
Wafting toward us from the concessions was the smell of popcorn and pizza and hot chocolate. Though it had rained only thirty minutes earlier, the sun was high and the silvery bleachers gleaned from its rays. There was a chill to the air, enough where we all wore sweat shirts or hoodies and where woman in the stands wrapped blankets around themselves. The girls on the field were chanting while they did their warm-up and then I heard a whistle and two little kids chasing each other down the track as they fought to get control of a loose ball.
Immersed into my own world, for a second, I forgot about the three of them and then turned and took a step away. It was then that I felt Jonah's crutch poke me on my rear end. I turned quickly and tried to grab the crutch but Jonah pulled back before I could. Now the three of them were howling.
“Don't let me come up there and get you guys,” I warned again, flexing my left arm as I walked away. One of them said, “Is that a string?” but I couldn't tell which one of them said it as I drifted away, feeling good about the exchange, feeling good that Jonah was laughing and was one of the boys and that life seemed to be getting normal for him again.
When I heard of his passing, it was a different kind of day. The clouds had sort of swallowed the sky and dropped and hung right above us. It made all of our worlds seem smaller.
And yes there were games and fouls called and penalty kicks and referee whistles ending games but it was all muffled in and out of my ears. The rains came around noon and they drenched us and the landscape. Leaving my final game, I felt soggy from my skin to my inner being.
At the hotel, the chatter started. There was crying and a lot of hugs and people patting backs to comfort one another. A few of the kids, who were my players, who did not know about Jonah asked about him but I was too tired and too numb to speak about him at that time. Retiring early to my room, I told them I would talk to them about Jonah after our next game.
We lost the game. After signing the game sheet, I took the boys to the corner of the field to talk. A few of them were crying about the loss while some cried about playing poorly and letting their teammates down. I addressed them immediately, and sternly.
“What are you crying about?” I asked. “This is just a game.”
I went on to tell them about Jonah and how he wished he had the chance to play again, to just play again, no matter if his team won or lost. He would love to be out on those green fields, glistening with the dew, running toward the flag to win a ball and cross it to an open teammate. You have it, you have everything to live for, to be happy about. Some of you wanted to know about Jonah, well let me tell you, he was a boy whose leg hurt around your age and never caught a break afterward. He fought through his pain as hard as any person could but every time there was a glimmer of hope it was dashed by another finding of cancer. While you guys were playing, he was in the hospital being poked and prodded, drinking dyes, having surgeries. There was little relief. Only the love of his mother, father, brothers, family and good friends could keep his spirits up.
As you could expect, the mood was somber. Then, inevitably, the question was asked that every boy on the team was thinking. “Was he any good?” one boy asked.
Let me tell you, I continued. Coach Gene was his coach but I filled in a couple of times and had to coach Jonah and his team. He was good. He was very good. He had a quick first step and he could run like a cheetah. What I remember about him is that he rarely spoke and back then he wore his bangs long to where they covered his entire forehead and touched his brows.
“He wouldn't talk?” one boy asked.
“Not to me. I'm sure he spoke to Coach Gene. He was shy.”
I explained that he knew what I wanted by nodding and that one time, after a game, I said something funny and I could see a slight smirk on his lips as he reached his hand out in the team huddle. I'll say this. He would play all over. Coach Gene would put him on top to get a couple of goals and then he would move Jonah to the back line once he got a lead. Jonah was unafraid and would header balls and tackle hard in order to keep the other team from scoring. Sometimes, Coach Gene would put him in the mid field because Jonah was a great passer. After a game at Total Soccer, I remember Coach Gene looking at Jonah the way a grandfather looks at his grandson and he said to me while shaking his head, “That kid is going to be a great one.”
When I finished, all my boys were staring at the grass, as if they were looking through the ground, as if there was a TV screen there that had their attention. They were as quiet as ever and I heard a few sniffles. One boy, who was sitting Indian style to my left looked up suddenly and said to me, “Coach Mac. It sounds to me like Jonah would have fit right in on our team.”
Oh yes, I thought. I contemplated what he said for a second, and considered a longer response, but then an inner voice told me to pause, so I hesitated and just shook my head and smiled.
“You're right” I said to him. “He was the kind of guy every team could use. You guys would have loved him. You would have thought he was the best teammate ever!”
God Bless Jonah Chrisman.

She currently plays travel soccer for the Michigan Gators FC - Dan Troccoli. Sarah plans to study computer forensics at Bloomsburg.
Nicole Yeip of Sterling Heights, Michigan has signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Siena Heights University. Yeip currently attends Sterling Heights Stevenson High School.
Yeip has played competitive soccer for the past six years with the last two years in the premier league in the state. She helped the Michigan Gators FC ’92 Blue get ranked #8 in the State of Michigan. For her high school team she has been one of the team stalwarts on defense and was also selected to the Macomb Area Conference All-Academic Team last season.
Yeip comments, “I am excited to be attending Siena Heights University and having the chance to play with the women’s soccer team the next four years. I hope I can help contribute to the successful seasons while working towards my Bachelors Degree in Science.”
“Nicole continues a long trend of successful Stevenson players that have come through our program over the last decade. We look for her to fit right into our team and help make us better. She is a great person and I am excited to add her to our team because I know she will add to our tightly knit team chemistry”, comments Siena Heights’ Head Coach Scott Oliver.
Kaila Moffett from Rochester, Michigan has signed on to play soccer for Siena Heights University in the fall of 2010. Moffett moved to Rochester, Michigan in 2009 from Colorado Springs, Colorado. She currently attends Stoney Creek High School in Rochester, MI.
At Liberty High School in Colorado Springs she was a varsity track athlete. In 2007, she was named as her high school team's Offensive Player of the Year. Since moving to Michigan she has lettered in soccer and played for the club teams RSC Lightning White ’92 and the Michigan Gators FC ’92 Blue. She helped the Lightning to a ranking of 4th in the state and the Gators to a #8 ranking.
A very good scholar, Moffett was named as the Stoney Creek High School Student of the Month in April of 2009. She comments on why she is attending Siena Heights, “I chose to attend Siena Heights University because I would like to pursue a career in elementary education while maintaining my athleticism on the soccer field. I am very excited to meet new people, new teammates, and reside in an entirely new atmosphere as a Siena Heights Saint!”
SHU Head Coach Scott Oliver comments on the addition of Moffett to their team, “I really feel Kaila is a superstar in the making. She has excellent technical and tactical ability. When you add her speed and work ethic to that, you are really looking at something special. I think Kaila will help our program right away whether it is on the field or just by being another one of our outstanding people of character on this team.”

Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki (R) receives a gift from former Iraqi soccer player Falah Hassan during a meeting with Iraqi immigrant athletes in Baghdad December 13, 2009.
Over two thousand Iraqi's welcomed soccer legend Falah Hassan back to his homeland. As one paper reported, the airport would have been filled with Falah Hassan fans had Baghdad not been war torn by the infiltrators. As many of you know, Falah was asked to return to Iraq by the current government in order to confer with cabinet members on how to rebuild their soccer and sports programs.

MI Gators FC 96 Orange Qualifies for State Cup Elimination Rounds
The MI Gators FC 96 Orange team had a strong showing in Michigan State Cup pool play ~ qualifying through to the elimination rounds and posting the highest goal differential of the 6-group, 24-team tournament. The 96 MI Gators recorded victories of 5-0, 7-0 and 5-1 against MESA Panthers, TNT Red and Grand Rapids Crew Black, giving them a bulky +16 goal differential for their efforts.
Head Coach, Jeff Hodgson, has done a great job coaching the girls into playing as a strong, cohesive attacking unit. New players, Olivia Withers (goalie) and Franny Smith (midfield) have transitioned seamlessly onto an already very talented group of girls. The girls recorded these three strong wins despite missing key defender Carly Alfano, out due to injury. The Gators hope to carry that level of success into the State Cup Quarterfinals where they face Vardar at 3 p.m. on October 3rd in Saginaw, Michigan.

Gators 93 Compete at USYSA Regionals
The 2008-09 Gators 93 Orange team concluded an extraordinarily successful season at the USYSA Midwest Regional Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. The U16 State Cup Champs faced the top teams from Region 2, and took defending Regional Champ KCFC to PKs before bowing out. The Gators kicked off bracket play with a 1-1 result vs. KCFC. They next faced Indiana state champ FC Pride, earning a 5-0 win, and then earned a 4-0 victory over Iowa state champ Ankeny. Because the Gators and KCFC were tied in all categories (head to head, goal difference and goals-against), a separate shootout to determine the bracket winner was required. Despite falling to KCFC in the shootout, the Gators represented Michigan, and the club, with honor in going undefeated and posting a composite score of 10-1.

2009 Michigan Gators F.C. Developmental Program
“Nothing Greater Than Being a Gator”
The Michigan Gators are proud of the effort of 24 very talented young ladies who participated in the club’s twelve week Developmental Program. Guided by Gator coaches Renee VanGampelaere and Gary Schodowski, the players all developed new skills and gained confidence on and off the field. Following the club's training philosophy ("The Gator Way"), the girls practiced and scrimmaged weekly, participated in 4v4 league play at the PTC, and topped off their experience by competing in the Border Star Tournament at Ultimate Soccer over the Memorial Day weekend.
The coaches told the girls and their parents, “We want to thank everyone for all of their support throughout the last few months. This is a very talented and fun group of girls. They always seem to try to do their best and that effort is much appreciated.”
The girls are now ready for the new 2009-2010 Gator season ahead and we all should be on the look out for these girls! Go Gators!!!!!

Megan Marsack just makes it look easy
Written by ESNN (Elite Soccer News Network)
March 08, 2009
If you want to know how good Megan Marsack is at soccer, don't ask her.
The Michigan Gators' standout either doesn't know or doesn't want to say.
A call-in to the U17 Women's National Team camp in Florida this January, Marsack was invited to the adidas ESP camp in California for 96 top players in the 2011 and 2012 graduating classes.
As her mom Leslie tells it, when Megan was asked upon returning home how well she did, she replied "I didn't do that good."
Which is pretty interesting considering she was named to the event's All-Star game and had her name mentioned pretty consistently by college coaches who were asked which players did well for themselves.
Another example came with that national team camp, when Leslie learned some teachers were unhappy that Megan had missed a week of school.
"It turns out all she said is that she was going to Florida and never said why, so they thought it was for a vacation," Leslie said. "Once I told them they were fine with it. When she goes to these camps I don't think she even tells her teammates. She just will not brag about herself."
However unassuming Marsack is off the field, she is quite willing to impose herself on it. Her club coach at Michigan Gators, Henry Steinwascher, said she has blossomed in this way in the past couple of years.
"With this team before she was in the shadow of a couple of other kids who had strong, type A personalities," Steinwascher said. "When I took the team a couple of years ago they left and I started to put more responsibility on her. I told her she needed to be one of the keys to the team."
Marsack is notable for her versatility. While she played outside back at ESP, she has also played forward for ODP and midfielder for her club team.
"She's the type of kid, if I told her to play in goal she could play in goal," Steinwascher said "She really could play anywhere."
She was wanting to play somewhere else when she first took the field as a right back at ESP; not because she doesn't like that position but because she was suddenly placed in front of about 100 watching coaches lining the sideline right next to her.
"Having all those college coaches so close was a little scary. I looked over and I was like ‘oh my gosh,'" she said. "But once I took a couple of touches on the ball I was able to relax. I was more nervous at national camp actually."
Marsack said she was told after that camp that she needed to be more assertive in taking players on, and to work on her skills in the air. At ESP, she was especially good at winning the ball and making decisions with it. Her athletic ability was also apparent, but Steinwascher said this is not always the case.
"She makes everything look so easy," he said. "When she runs or we do sprint drills or whatever, she looks like it takes her no effort to be that fast. With other kids you see the ugly face, the grinding hard but not with her. It just looks easy."
Some other Midwesterners who were at the national team camp in January included Olivia Brannon, Sarah Molina, Brittany Von Rueden, Ashley Meier and Olivia Schultz.
Marsack is attracting all sorts of attention from DI coaches now, but once again she doesn't appear to recognize how coveted she will be on the recruiting trail.
"I hope I can play for a DI school," she said. "I know I want to stay kind of close to my house."
Considering a major in the medical field, she does at least allow that she would like to play in the new WPS after her school days.
Until then she'll be winning balls, helping the attack and just upgrading the quality of the team around her….whether she realizes it or not.
2009 National Indoor Champions
The U8 Gators continue to impress with their 5th tournament victory of the season. Guided by coach SG Aryan, the young Gators prepared for the finals by playing in two National Indoor Regionals in Fraser and Canton in December and January.
In the Fraser regional, the Gators went 4-0 against teams from North Macomb, Michigan Elite Gators, and a hybrid team from the westside called the Michigan Cheetahs. In the Canton regional, the girls continued to impress defeating CYSC, Waza, and splitting games with that hybrid team now called the Michigan Panthers. The Panthers got the best of the Gators early on Sunday winning 4-3 but the girls rebounded in the finals winning 5-2 to take home the championship.
Moving into the Indoor Finals in February in Fraser and Novi, the U8 Gators knocked off the Grand Rapids Crew (18-1), the Michigan Elite Gators (10-2) and faced their cross-town rivals Michigan Panthers twice on Sunday. The Panthers (consisting of players from the MI Hawks, Novi Jaguars, Michigan Rush, and Waza) hosted the Gators in Novi in the morning and the game was back and forth but in the end the Gators pulled out a tough 8-6 victory.
The championship game delivered excitement and drama as the lead change hands multiple times throughout. In the end, another tough victory was had by the Gators winning 10-6. Congratulations to the Panthers for being a very tough opponent! Congratulations to the U8 Gators and best of luck on the rest of the season!! Congratulations to both Michigan Gators United '00 Orange teams for winning the U9 Division 1 and U9 Division 2 National Indoor Championships hosted by Total Soccer (Fraser) and Total Sports (Novi) the weekend of February 21st and 22nd. The teams (co-coached by SG Aryan and Curtis Ward) worked together for nearly 4 months to achieve this great accomplishment.
The teams prepared for Nationals by playing together in indoor league play in Fraser and Novi and also participated in two National Indoor Regional tournaments. In the Fraser regional in December, both teams won their respective U9 division championships. In January the teams traveled to Canton Mi to play another regional where the Division 1 team won the championship and the Division 2 were finalists.
In the finals, both teams faced tough competition but came away with first place medals. The Division 1 team defeated North Carolina’s NLA Black team 8-2, Medina Ohio Classics 13-1, LCSC 7-1, and cross-town rival Michigan Hawks 3-1 in the clinch victory. The Division 2 team defeated Waza 4-2, BASC Nitro 10-1, and finished off with back to back wins against the Bedford Impact (3-1 and 4-3) to seal the championship. Success
for Megan Marsack
Congratulations to Megan Marsack for being selected to the U17 Women's National Player Pool. Megan was invited to the U17/U15 Super Camp on January 28th - Feb 5th in Sunrise, FL. She is also attending the Adidas ESP camp on February 19-22nd in California.
Megan has worked very hard to get to this level of play. She has been on the ODP 93 State team for the past 2 years and has also been on the Region II / Regional Team for the past 2 years.
Megan's team has had a very sucessful year under the coaching of Henry Steinwascher. They won the 2009 State Cup Championship. Best of luck to Megan and her team in the future!
U16 Girls State Cup Champs!
The Michigan Gators 93 Orange captured the U16 State Cup Championship with a hard-fought victory over the Michigan Hawks. These top two teams in Michigan have battled each other for years in close games, and the championship was no different. Outstanding defense and physical midfield play by both teams resulted in a 0-0 score at the end of regulation. In the first minute of overtime, the Gators broke through with beautiful passing from Megan Marsack and Aubrey Sudomier to Angela Vultaggio, resulting in a goal. The Hawks evened the score midway through the second overtime on a perfectly placed direct kick inside the post. The Gators then converted 4 of 5 PKs with Maria Toth punching in the winning kick following a second Hawk miss. Angela was named State Cup MVP and Jessica Wineke was named Most Valuable GK. Congratulations to Coach Henry Steinwascher and his dedicated and talented U16 Girls!
U14 Girls State Cup Champs!
The U14 Michigan Gators Elite proved they had the hearts of a champion as they snatched the State Cup away from their arch-rival, The Michigan Hawks. With both teams matching each other in talent, the two squads traded punches throughout the match like two world class fighters. The keepers on both sides needed to make great saves to keep their team in the game. Finally, with eight minutes to go, Liz Abro broke in from the right side and took a harrowing shot that the Hawk keeper punched brilliantly over the bar. The great save allowed for a corner kick for the Gators. After the ball was played in and there was an initial save, on the rebound, a Hawk player knocked the ball out of the air with her hands. The Gators were rewarded with a penalty shot. Chrisa K. calmly placed the ball in the corner of the net with her shot and thus gave the Michigan Gators club their sixth State Cup Championship. State Cup MVP was Bre Smith and Goalie MVP was Julie Debus. Congratulations to Coach Andy Blasco and his assistant Franco Mancini for a job well done. The Michigan Gators are proud of the U14's achievements and look for many more titles from this highly talented squad.
Two For Two!
It was a great day for the Gator Nation! Both the U14 and U16 teams won the State Cup title with thrilling victories over their arch rival, the Michigan Hawks. Articles and photos of the teams will be published here in the next couple of days. Look for more on this incredible day for the Michigan Gators.
You've chosen the best.
Remarkable run for the Gator Nation!
The Michigan Gators have fielded a team in every age of this year's quarter-finals of the State Cup. What a remarkable accomplishment! Here is a breakdown of the coaching staff and their respective teams.
Please take the time to support our teams in the upcoming State Cup playoffs.

Exhibiting size, speed, and skill, the Michigan Gators defeated the renowned Michigan Hawks 94 in the championship game. In a game that see-sawed back and forth, the Gators finally broke through in the final 4 minutes of the game when Stephanie Garland picked up a rebound off a DD Devukaj shot. In the quarters and semi's, the Gators needed to defeat a highly talented Crew team from Grand Rapids and a scrappy Strikers team from Chicago. Coach Mac believed the difficult games prepared them well for the final against the Hawks. "To defeat a team like the Hawks, you have to be seasoned and tested. You're playing against the best. You have to be ready," were Maccagnone's comments after the game.
U11 Gators FC Blue

The U11 Gator FC Blue team won the championship title playing a year up in the U12 division at the US Club regionals in Indianapolis June 27th - 30th!

Gator Nation Rules the Warrior Classic
This past Memorial weekend, over 575 teams traveled from all over the Midwest to compete in the Dayton, Ohio Warrior Classic Youth Soccer Tournament. In fact, the Warrior is the third largest youth soccer tournament in the world. Among all of these teams from many different parts of the country, the Gators emerged as a dominant force in the U13 girls age group. The Gators Orange and Gators Elite teams both advanced through pool play as group winners, won their respective semi-finals, and met in the final. The Gators Orange won the interclub final 4-2, but tremendous effort and skill was displayed by both teams.
It is a true testament to the Gators club to see both teams in the age group advance to the finals in the top division of a tournament of such magnitude. Congratulations ladies! The 95 Gators has a tremendous future. Look for many more success stories to come.

How About Those Gators!
Well it finally happened and it could not have been a more deserving group of girls. Jeff Hodgson’s Gators ’97 Orange Team went into Cleveland for the U11 Girls Division 1 National Championship an underdog and came home champions! Despite blizzard conditions, the girls were focused and played their best soccer of the year. They clearly demonstrated their skill level, pin point passing, along with a terrific team spirit to every club in the tournament and beat the Hawks 4-3 in a thrilling OT!
This is a team of U11’s with some U10’s that have slugged it out with U13 girls and U12 boys all season long, winning some and losing some but never loosing focus or belief in their abilities. It was a fantastic win for a deserving group of girls that went to Cleveland and made the club proud!

Ranked 5th best Girl’s Club in USA by National Soccer Rankings
When Jeff Hodgson created the Michigan Gators FC, his dream was to prove female athletes could play the game of soccer in the same entertaining way males athletes played. Jeff wanted the girl’s program to have parity with the boys, to have equal clout within an organization, to be able to stand up on it’s own as a Club producing some of the greatest soccer players the State has ever known.
In 5 short years, Hodgson has elevated the Michigan Gators as one of America’s top soccer Club for girls and young women. Now, with the addition of local coaching legends, Jeremy Harkins, Gene Harkins, and Henry Steinwascher, the Michigan Gators FC feels it has the right experience to take the Club right to the apex of Club soccer.
As great teachers of the game, the Michigan Gators FC works hard to make sure each female athlete is developed as a great technical player. The “ball” is the game, so therefore we must develop players who can control the ball with the most composure and confidence. Our curriculum stresses foot work, from step-overs to scissor moves. The staff expects a lot from their students and the students meet the challenge.
The Michigan Gators look forward to adding your daughter to our long list of great female soccer players currently in the Club. Welcome to the only organization on the east side committed to the female athlete, an organization which has created a tradition of developing great soccer players.
