U12 Blue says goodbye to Nick Tater
FC Nova U12 Blue
After learning that Nick Tater's father was transferred to Colorado,
the team posed for a picture with Nick prior to his departure. As a long time
Nova player, Coach Mac singled out Nick for his dedication, loyalty to Nova,
and his spirited play. We're all certainly going to miss him.

Jonah Chrisman.... Best teammate ever!

Jonah Chrisman
The last time I spoke to Jonah, he was sitting in the bleachers at Stevenson High School waiting for the girls varsity game to begin. He was sitting with Keaton and Spencer and, as I approached them, the three of them, as many of my ex-players often do, seemed to be giddy and anxious to start some trouble with me. As soon as I got near them, the relentless teasing started.

“Hey old man,” Keaton blurted out, placing his hands around his mouth in order to throw his voice. He didn't need to. I was only two rows away. Spencer and Jonah were smiling like a couple of pranksters as they leaned into Keaton, knowing they were going to be witnesses to a possible classic cut down session.

“You still think you can run old man?” Keaton continued. I stopped in my tracks.

“What? You think you can beat me?”

“I'll give you a twenty yard lead in a fifty yard dash and beat you running backwards,” he quipped back. Spencer and Jonah threw their heads back in laughter.

“You said that a few years back and I whipped you easily.” I responded. “Do you want an old man to embarrass you again?”

“That was five years ago,” Keaton quickly shot back. “I was eleven at the time.”

As I pointed toward the field, I said, “I'll go down on that field right now if you want and whip you in front of this capacity crowd.”

“The only way you could beat me if they put a cheeseburger at the finish line.”

Spencer and Jonah laughed heartily as they reached toward Keaton to give him a high five.

“Oh you think that's funny?” I said to the two of them. “He steals my joke and uses it against me and you two clowns laugh.” They all shook their heads
in solidarity. Then, I quickly stepped toward them like I was going to get them. Then I stopped. “Don't let me come up there,” I warned. Jonah grabbed his crutch.

“This will protect us,” he said.

“Yeah right,” I answered back. “If I get a hold of that, you know where it's going to end up.”

“Ooooh,” they responded in unison. Then Keaton shot back, “What are you going to do, throw your hat at us?”

It was then that I knew I couldn't win any battle of wits. They had a support system and I had only me. When men razz each other they need friends loyal to their cause to laugh at their jokes. In the case I'm describing, I was certainly out numbered.

Smiling, I watched the three of them taunt me to try and come up and get them. Trying to savor the moment, I looked beyond them and tried consciously to become more aware of that which surrounded us.

Wafting toward us from the concessions was the smell of popcorn and pizza and hot chocolate. Though it had rained only thirty minutes earlier, the sun was high and the silvery bleachers gleaned from its rays. There was a chill to the air, enough where we all wore sweat shirts or hoodies and where woman in the stands wrapped blankets around themselves. The girls on the field were chanting while they did their warm-up and then I heard a whistle and two little kids chasing each other down the track as they fought to get control of a loose ball.

Immersed into my own world, for a second, I forgot about the three of them and then turned and took a step away. It was then that I felt Jonah's crutch poke me on my rear end. I turned quickly and tried to grab the crutch but Jonah pulled back before I could. Now the three of them were howling.

“Don't let me come up there and get you guys,” I warned again, flexing my left arm as I walked away. One of them said, “Is that a string?” but I couldn't tell which one of them said it as I drifted away, feeling good about the exchange, feeling good that Jonah was laughing and was one of the boys and that life seemed to be getting normal for him again.

When I heard of his passing, it was a different kind of day. The clouds had sort of swallowed the sky and dropped and hung right above us. It made all of our worlds seem smaller.

And yes there were games and fouls called and penalty kicks and referee whistles ending games but it was all muffled in and out of my ears. The rains came around noon and they drenched us and the landscape. Leaving my final game, I felt soggy from my skin to my inner being.

At the hotel, the chatter started. There was crying and a lot of hugs and people patting backs to comfort one another. A few of the kids, who were my players, who did not know about Jonah asked about him but I was too tired and too numb to speak about him at that time. Retiring early to my room, I told them I would talk to them about Jonah after our next game.

We lost the game. After signing the game sheet, I took the boys to the corner of the field to talk. A few of them were crying about the loss while some cried about playing poorly and letting their teammates down. I addressed them immediately, and sternly.

“What are you crying about?” I asked. “This is just a game.”

I went on to tell them about Jonah and how he wished he had the chance to play again, to just play again, no matter if his team won or lost. He would love to be out on those green fields, glistening with the dew, running toward the flag to win a ball and cross it to an open teammate. You have it, you have everything to live for, to be happy about. Some of you wanted to know about Jonah, well let me tell you, he was a boy whose leg hurt around your age and never caught a break afterward. He fought through his pain as hard as any person could but every time there was a glimmer of hope it was dashed by another finding of cancer. While you guys were playing, he was in the hospital being poked and prodded, drinking dyes, having surgeries. There was little relief. Only the love of his mother, father, brothers, family and good friends could keep his spirits up.

As you could expect, the mood was somber. Then, inevitably, the question was asked that every boy on the team was thinking. “Was he any good?” one boy asked.

Let me tell you, I continued. Coach Gene was his coach but I filled in a couple of times and had to coach Jonah and his team. He was good. He was very good. He had a quick first step and he could run like a cheetah. What I remember about him is that he rarely spoke and back then he wore his bangs long to where they covered his entire forehead and touched his brows.

“He wouldn't talk?” one boy asked.

“Not to me. I'm sure he spoke to Coach Gene. He was shy.”

I explained that he knew what I wanted by nodding and that one time, after a game, I said something funny and I could see a slight smirk on his lips as he reached his hand out in the team huddle. I'll say this. He would play all over. Coach Gene would put him on top to get a couple of goals and then he would move Jonah to the back line once he got a lead. Jonah was unafraid and would header balls and tackle hard in order to keep the other team from scoring. Sometimes, Coach Gene would put him in the mid field because Jonah was a great passer. After a game at Total Soccer, I remember Coach Gene looking at Jonah the way a grandfather looks at his grandson and he said to me while shaking his head, “That kid is going to be a great one.”

When I finished, all my boys were staring at the grass, as if they were looking through the ground, as if there was a TV screen there that had their attention. They were as quiet as ever and I heard a few sniffles. One boy, who was sitting Indian style to my left looked up suddenly and said to me, “Coach Mac. It sounds to me like Jonah would have fit right in on our team.”

Oh yes, I thought. I contemplated what he said for a second, and considered a longer response, but then an inner voice told me to pause, so I hesitated and just shook my head and smiled.

“You're right” I said to him. “He was the kind of guy every team could use. You guys would have loved him. You would have thought he was the best teammate ever!”

God Bless Jonah Chrisman.

The P.S.G. Youth Academy

We are pleased to announce the new PSG Youth Academy for all boys and girls ages 5, 6, & 7. Click on the sidebar link for more information!

PSG Youth Academy 2010
The PSG Youth Academy kicked off it's inaugural season in a grand way! With over 20 kids enrolled, the program is growing every day. "This is the start of building confident soccer players" said program director Frank Schodowski. "We have a coaching staff at PSG that has a proven track record of developing the best players in the area. I wanted to 'tap' into that knowledge and give it to the younger players where development is so important."

The program is designed for boys and girls ages 5-7 who have reached the limits of their "recreational" league, or who are looking for technical instruction. The emphasis will be on ball mastery, taking on defenders 1v1, and small group play. The group trains once each week and plays small-sided games on the weekends.

Spots are still available for the Fall Season and for those already on a league, check out the indoor Winter Sessions. Click the "Youth Academy" tab on the left for more information.

Coach Falah gets a hero's welcome on return to Baghdad!
Falah Award
Iraq's Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki (R) receives a gift from former Iraqi soccer player Falah Hassan during a meeting with Iraqi immigrant athletes in Baghdad December 13, 2009.

Falah Hassan
Over two thousand Iraqi's welcomed soccer legend Falah Hassan back to his homeland. As one paper reported, the airport would have been filled with Falah Hassan fans had Baghdad not been war torn by the infiltrators. As many of you know, Falah was asked to return to Iraq by the current government in order to confer with cabinet members on how to rebuild their soccer and sports programs.

Jonah News!

This is directly from his Jonah's carepages 11/22/09

We hit a bit of a snag today in not getting the left lung tube out. There still seems to be a bit of a leak that hasn't sealed itself so no tubes came out today. I hope we can get at least one out tomorrow so we can also start getting rid of some of the other stuff Jonah is hooked to as well. He was able to take his oxygen off and his levels are great. He took it off during the night last night and every once in the while his levels would get low and the monitor would beep. So definitely see an improvement there.
Jonah had a great day today. Pain was under control. He had PT and got out of bed for a bit which is tough to do with all the tubes he's chained to. He has been a real trooper and is patiently waiting to get home. I hear him texting his friends which is always good to hear. It gives him a chance to talk and vent. I'm sure he's tired of hanging out with his parents stuck in the hospital. I try to give him his space as much as possible.
Lots of football on this weekend so he has been staying up pretty much all day to watch as many games as he can and work on his Fantasy football league. He has started to get his appetite back and is eating little bits here and there. Uncle Mark drove up from Chicago for the day to visit and watched some football with us. It was great to see him and we had a nice visit.
Caleb and Luke hung out with their cousins all weekend. Due to the H1N1 flu they don't want anyone under 16 years old coming up to the hospital floors.
Exciting news...the Stevenson high school football team played last night and earned their place in the State championship which will be played down at Ford field next Saturday. Thanks to friends who texted both Jonah and I to keep us updated. Heard it was a very exciting game! Brings back memories when I was a sophomore and my high school team won the State championship (Class B). How exciting!
Wanted to share something that has been making the rounds on all the osteo carepages. It really hits home!
Parents of children with a terminal illness are often referred to or viewed as having strength “like a rock.” Albeit flattering, it isn’t quite true. It is more like the strength of an egg. An egg, you ask? Yes! If you’ll think about it, you’ll see my point. An egg has a polished, smooth outer appearance, with no cracks or weak spots visible. It seems almost inconceivable that the inside might not be so smooth or solid. Most children, at some point are shown the famous egg trick. An egg set at just the right angle can withstand enormous amounts of pressure and cannot be cracked or broken. Yet the same egg, tapped gently at an ever slightly different angle, will break. The contents, once so neatly concealed, will come spilling out. The no longer perfect shell will be crushed. It looks so fragile that it seems inconceivable that it ever held any strength. A rock, on the other hand, is solid all the way through. To break it is almost impossible. If you succeed, you will find that there is nothing inside but more rock. It takes a lot more than pure hardness to hold the hand of hope. Parents of [medically fragile] children are not solid all the way through. We hurt, we fear, we cry, we hope. It takes a very careful balancing act to keep the shell from being shattered. “Balancing an egg” while running a household, going for doctors’ visits and hospital stays, keeping the family together, and holding on to the constantly unraveling ties of your sanity can be very tricky indeed! Occasionally, the angle will be off and the shell will break, shattering hope and all the neatly secured appearances of a truly fragile existence. Unlike Humpty Dumpty, though, parents of medically fragile kids will pick themselves up and put themselves back together again.
God bless you all and thanks for staying in touch. We love to hear from you all. Let's pray things start moving along tomorrow.

While in St. Louis, the U10 Nova boys had the chance to meet the world's most well known Savant. His name is Kim Peek and he was Barry Morrow's inspiration behind the Oscar winning movie entitled, "The Rainman." Mr. Peek allowed the boys to hold his Oscar that was well earned after the performances of Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise. 00 Academy Black brings home the Mead Cup!
00 Academy Black
After losing in the final last year, the 00 Academy Black team was determined to
get their hands on the Mead Cup and hold it as their own in the winning circle. In the end, that's exactly what they did, convincingly defeating all their opponents in an artful and graceful style of play that had many tournament watchers mesmerized. For soccer enthusiasts, it was quite a show. Many thanks to Coach Falah and Coach Mac for working diligently with the boys on their technical needs throughout the summer months. The hard work certainly paid off.

2009 Mead Cup U9 FiveStar Division Champions
FC Nova 01 Black '09 Mead Cup Champs
What an amazing way to start off the season! For the 2nd year in a row, the FC Nova U9 black team won the CUSA Mead Cup Championship. This special team of boys worked together to win every game in their division. Game #1 against the CUSA Courage '00 team score was 9-0. We were warned about the 2nd game team, the Team Challengers FC. They were the team to beat. And we did 7-4. We then played the CUSA Donovan team and took it to them 8-1. Advancing to the Semi-Finals, being delayed by rain, thunder and lightning built up the anticipation. The CSA Galaxy team came to this tournament deliberately to play our team. So, their wish came true and they lost 5-2, continuing to the Final game against NWC Alliance '00 black team. Within minutes of the game the opposing team scored 2 goals. Our boys didn't take this lightly. Coming back with a vengeance FC Nova's U9 boys ended up with a 6-2 victory! Once again the team returns to Michigan with a CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY. Congratulations to Coach Macc and the success of his U9 boy’s team.

Stellar Start for FC Nova Academy 00 Black
FC Nova Academy OO Black
Well, what a start to the 2009 soccer season for the FC Nova Academy 00 Black team. The team travelled to Fort Wayne Indiana to the Ft. Wayne Fever Soccer Fest tournament on Friday. Their first game was on Saturday. They were playing against one of the home town favorites, Fever 00 Black team and started out with a scoring frenzy with a 7 to 0 victory. The next game would be later that afternoon against an International girls team, that in the older age group are ranked third in the nation. The parents on the opposing side looked at our boys and said this should be a easy victory for us. Well our FC Nova boys came out like a bunch of swarming bee’s to defeat them 12 to 0. This set the table for us on Sunday to play against another home town favorite Fever 99 black. One more time our boys took charge of the game with a 7 to 1 victory over the Fever 99 black team. We were on our way to the finals. Our boys knew, they would be in for a battle. We had to play another Fever team. The fever started out with a 2 to 0 lead before half time. Our FC Nova boys had to regroup and get two goals in before the end of the game, which did accrue. We were going to play overtime, two five minute halves. The first five minutes ended with a tie. In the second five minutes our team would not give up, a perfect last minute victory 3 to 2 to win the championship. Just to sum up the team results for the weekend the FC Nova Academy 00 team scored 31 goals and only gave up 3 goals. What a terrific start of the fall 2009 soccer season for the FC Nova Academy 00 Black Team, congratulations for a job well done.

U8 Nova boys rock National Indoor Championships!
U8 Nova National Indoor Champions
There are 5 teams heading home from Canton, Michigan wondering what hit them! Here’s a reminder – it was “Nova, You Know”!!
The FC Nova ’01 Black team walked into High Velocity Saturday morning looking forward to a challenging weekend against teams from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and New York. They walked out Sunday afternoon with Gold Championship medals!!
The tournament started strong with an 11 – 1 win against Avon Select. Their success continued as scores of 15 – 5 (Perrysburg) and 11 – 0 (AAFC Patriots) gave Nova the first place seed and a semi-final game against Alliance FC. The semi-finals brought what a great tournament should – solid competition, close scores and great talent. Nova once again persevered and a 5 – 2 win sent them into the finals.
The Grand Rapids Crew was poised to be their toughest competition. After 40 minutes of play, relentless determination, superior skills and fantastic coaching proved to be a recipe for success. Nova attacked fast and had a 3 – 0 lead early in the game. Nova continued to dominated the game, stretching the lead to 8 – 0. The Crew came back with 2 goals late in the game, but refusing to let them score last, Nova came through in true PSG style and scored at the final buzzer to win the Championship game 9 – 2!
At the post-game celebration at Baskin Robbins, the team called Coach Falah, who was not able to be in Canton. The team manager told Coach “the boys have something to tell you” and held up the phone to which all the boys yelled “We have ice cream!!” And then one boy added – “Oh yeah, and we won the tournament”. You couldn’t ask for a greater team of boys!

U8 Nova – National Indoor Regional Champions!
U8 FC Nova
Congratulations to Coach Falah Hassan and the FC Nova '01 Black team for finishing 1st in U9 Division 2 at the NISC Regional Tournament Dec 6 - 7. The team worked hard to beat Michigan Revolution 10–1, tie Nova ’00 White 3-3 and beat Vardar East 7–1, which led to a Nova vs. Nova Championship game. It was a hard fought battle, but in the end the ’01 Black team came out with an 8 – 5 victory. Both Nova teams played very well and deservingly qualified for the NISC National Tournament.

Boys U13 Michigan Elite 96 Black
U13 MI Elite
WOW! What a weekend for the Boys U13 Michigan Elite 96 Black soccer team. Coach Henry Steinwascher took the boys to Collinsville, IL looking for competition and he found it. He had to not only be proud, but pleased with the effort of his fifteen boys in their win of the Metro FC Tournament just outside of St Louis, Missouri.

The boys played solid in their opening match with Ankeny Soccer Club Maroon, out of Iowa, defeating Ankeny 3 to 0. Their second contest allowed them some breathing room with a 7 to 0 shutout against Summit SSC Fury from Missouri. The third and final game of round play is where the competition started to heat up. The boys played steady against a strong team from Illinois, the Chicago Kickers Red and upended them 3 to 1.

That win put our Michigan Elite team into the semi finals against none other than the Michigan Wolves from Livonia. What a game! After falling behind early the boys stayed positive and fought back and at the end of regulation it was all tied at one goal apiece. The two teams proceeded to play two five minute halves of overtime. You guessed it, after falling behind early again; it was tied at 2 goals apiece at the end of both periods of overtime. It was time to break the tie with a shoot out. I don’t know who was more nervous the boys or the parents. We were once again down early in the shoot out, but came back to win 4 – 3. How impressive was it to see the boys not get down on themselves or each other; what a way to finish a game!

Oh, but it’s not over, so onto the finals against another big nemesis the Carmel United CUSA Academy from Indiana. As in the past with Carmel, the game turns into a defensive struggle with regulation ending in a 0 to 0 tie. The two periods of overtime did not change the results, so here we go again – its shootout time. The boys again prevailed with a 4 – 3 advantage to win the tournament.

U8 Nova Boys are Mead Cup Champions!
U8 Boys Mead Cup Champs
Congratulations to Coach Falah Hassan and the FC Nova ’01 Black team for winning the U8 Boys Five Star division and bringing home the Championship trophies over Labor Day weekend! These young Nova boys showed teams from Ohio and Indiana they weren’t messing around. The team won three straight games to sweep the division - scoring 11 goals along the way and only allowing 1 goal against.
Monday brought the championship game against the home town BSA Celtic and a 6 – 1 victory. The boys brought home fantastic memories – and Coach Falah brought home a trophy that is taller than every player on the team! Way to go boys – your parents, coaches and the club are very proud of your hard work and determination!

U9's win prestigious NSR Cup
U9 FC Nova 2008
The U9 FC Nova team defeated an impressive and talented Michigan Burn team in the final of the NSR Cup. Combining a tenacious defense with a balanced attack, the Nova 9's won the final with a flurry of goals in the second half. Coach Mac was extremely happy with how his team shared the ball over the weekend. "Our passing game was the real difference," Coach Mac stated in the press room after the game.

It was victory for the FC Nova U8 Boys at the Kick It 3 v 3 regional tournament held in Buffalo, New York on August 2-3, 2008. The exhilarating weekend demonstrated the determination of the up and coming talent in the Michigan FC Nova youth program. The Nova boys faced off two very challenging teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania early Saturday resulting in tight, yet disappointing losses. In response, game three matched NOVA against the Lenox Little Dudes from Massachusetts with a commanding 12-0 victory which served as the turning point in the come back run for the gold going into Sunday’s events.

On Sunday, the young NOVA boys demonstrated their foot skills and stamina to take the quarterfinals 12-1, setting the stage for a Semifinal rematch against the Class Act team from Pennsylvania, who were victorious over NOVA in a tight 3-1 match on Saturday. While the game was tight until the very end, NOVA prevailed 4-1 to qualify for the championship game against the hometown favorites, the Buffalo Wild Wings. The NOVA journeymen were fired up going into the championship and jumped out to silence the hometown crowd by finding the net quickly in the first half. With ball control, crisp passes and wide open play, the NOVA team captured the gold by sealing the deal in a memorable 4-1 victory. Coach Ryan Nardozzi said “our boys met the challenge this weekend by focusing on teamwork, creating space, taking the shots when we had the opportunity, and ultimately, never giving up”.
Our F.C. NOVA U9 Boys now advance to the World Championship held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports on January 17-19, 2009.

Remarkable victory for the U13 Michigan Elite State Cup Championship!

Overcoming adversity beyond comprehension, the U13 Michigan Elite team would not allow themselves to be defeated in their quest for the State Cup. Having dedicated their season to their stricken teammate, the boys put on a show that all club members and soccer fans across the state could be proud of. Jonah Chrisman was voted the team's MVP at the tournament. Jonah's great play, his determination, his courage, his unwillingness to quit and his dedication to his team were the inspiration behind the U13's  remarkable victory. There is no greater teammate. There is no greater team. This is a team of destiny, a team to be remembered for all times, not just for their great victory on the field, but for their decency, their character, their willingness to sacrifice for the club, the team, and each other. We are very proud of these boys. It has been an honor to be amongst them this year.

Great job Henry Steinwascher. Great job Dave Amez. Great job parents!

Golden Mother's Day gift for the 96 Nova Black team!

Happy Mother’s Day from the ‘96 Nova Black Team! Taking home the gold in the U13Y Elite division at the Novi Jags Tournament May 10-11 was a perfect gift for all the parents of this amazing group of young men who never fail to show what teamwork can do. This team continues to succeed and grow under the direction of Coach Henry Steinwascher. Battling through their bracket with three shut-outs shows the amazing defense on this team. The scores reflect the outstanding offense: 3-0 vs. Michigan Rush; 4-0 vs. TNT Dynamite; 4-0 vs. Bloomfield Force Navy. Finals matched Nova against the host club Novi Jags Green team. What horrible weather to be playing soccer – both teams did a great job and kept everyone on the edge of their umbrella! Double overtime with Nova scoring with just minutes left put the boys in the winning circle! Very exciting game and again, great soccer by both teams! Congratulations boys and keep on doing what you’re doing, because it’s working!

We received our Jonah arm bands today and WORE THEM WITH PRIDE.

Our thoughts are with you,
NOVA 98 BLACK

“Winning is a by-product of playing great soccer.”

More than anything, the game is about imagination. To stimulate a player’s creative abilities, every coach should foster a positive environment for the developing player, an environment that allows the player to be inventive, spontaneous, and unafraid.

At FC NOVA, we encourage this type of approach, while instilling in each player the technical ability needed to advance the player to his highest potential. From the earliest years of 6 through 8, our staff is dedicated to teaching the necessary foot skills to our students, the type of skills that allow them to compete against any team in the land.

As you can see, we have assembled a staff known to be great “teachers” of the game. These are teachers who have high expectations for each student. The bar will be set high. The coaching staff will not accept mediocrity.

Expect the players to know how to play out of their back end, to switch the field, to run diagonals, to understand combination play. Players will know how to curve shots, how to chip balls softly over a defenders head, how to hit a volley out of the air with either foot.

Through hard work and determination every player’s dreams can be realized! As an organization, our strongest belief is that we should never get in the way of our player’s dreams. We are about hope, about will, about perseverance, about respect, about humility, about keeping your word. FC NOVA is a boy’s soccer Club you can count on, an organization you can trust to always have your son’s best interests at heart.
